If you live in Boston, you may finally be done cursing the Cartoon Network for causing a city-wide terrorism scare with its viral marketing campaign gone awry last week. Apparently, the geniuses in charge of marketing "Adult Swim" thought it'd be a peachy idea to hire (the now incarcerated) Peter Berdovsky to place LED panels featuring "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" characters Ingingokt and Err in obscure locations around the city. Apparently, the Boston Police Department (BPD) and Homeland Security officials mistook the strange devices for potential bombs, and more or less shut down the city while the bomb squad took care of the "threat."
All arguments about the BPD's lack of humor and un-hipness aside, the ill-conceived campaign was obviously a colossal blunder. Not only did it scare the daylights out of a bunch of Bostonians, it also inconvenienced potentially millions of people and will probably lead to some serious legal trouble for the network. In this day and age, odd, homemade-looking devices featuring blinking lights placed in public places really aren't a great way to get (positive) attention.
Though it may be satisfying to chuckle over the absurdity of the whole incident, the Great Boston Mooninite Scare bears examination. With increasingly more marketers obsessed with social media, consumer-generated content, viral marketing, and word-of-mouth, there's a lot we can learn from this debacle (besides the obvious: it's a really bad idea to scare consumers with humorous devices that could be mistaken for bombs.
If you want to generate word-of-mouth, don't try to be hip. Just because you've read about some hot new trend on Make, We Make Money Not Art, Boing Boing, or even the hipper-than-thou Futurelab blog doesn't mean you should start incorporating it into your marketing plan. By the time you read about it, those nifty things have usually been done by people far cooler than you and they're going to know you're faking it.
Don't believe me? Just check out some gems like Campbell Soup's foray into rap or Intel's jaunts into DJ culture to see how irritating it can be to get it wrong. Oh, and if you value your sanity, don't even think of watching this hip-hop spot from a clueless personal injury law firm.
Destruction of property or intruding into people's comfort zones will only backfire. Yes, it seems obvious, but Sony found this out the hard way with its stupid PSP Graffiti campaign. Sony employed local graffiti artists to decorate public buildings with PSP-themed images. Chase Bank also discovered intruding into public space can generate some very strong public reactions when it was forced by New York City to stop projecting giant logos on the street.
But don't think this stuff only happens in the physical world. Obtrusive advertising in the form of pop-ups and irritating rich media units have been annoying consumers for a long time now. They might get noticed, but they're also damaging your brand.
You can't fake authenticity. I wrote about this back in October in relation to Wal-Mart's flog fiasco, but there have been plenty of other offenders. One of the most notable is Sony's PSP flog, a travesty that not only was unbelievably badly conceived but once exposed had its fake bloggers try to defend what they were doing in pseudo-rapper/gamer/script-kiddie patois so incredibly uncool that it makes K-Fed look like Tupac in comparison. This kind of thing always fails because its impossible to fake honesty in communications and there's really no reason to do so. As blogger Claire Rusko-Berger puts it in her fantastic essay on authenticity, "to be successful and honest, your 'authenticity"' must edit that noise, provide expert information, and structure information in a usable way." To be successful, you gotta be real. And there's some really excellent research that proves full disclosure really works.
Know your audience. Stunts like this one that promoted a French mountain biking company (and the biker who performed the daring deed) come across as authentic because the people involved knew who they were talking to as they were part of that group. It's even possible to turn disaster into opportunity when you really know the sensibility of the folks you're trying to reach.
Love your customers. If you do, they'll respond in kind, the way Apple fans like this woman do when they put the time and effort into creating videos and songs about how much they love their favorite brands. Heck, even Starburst has young fans fanatical enough about their products to take the time and energy to create their own commercials.If we learn anything from the whole Cartoon Network episode, it should be that creating truly viral marketing is hard. Really hard. It's hard to define, hard to pin down, and hard to pull off without looking manipulative or just uncool. You can try, but after you see commercials like this one or videos like this one, you should realize creating so-bad-it's-good viral content is almost impossible to do intentionally. When you start out, I think it's better to start to use "money for money" approach since you want the data it returns. In many companies the marketing team is tasked with driving leads to the sales team. This isn't a trivial thing; businesses must sign on new customers to grow. But sometimes, especially in e-mail marketing, the broader responsibilities and goals of marketing, over and above immediate sales and lead generation, seem to get lost.
Case in point: e-mail messages that are strictly promotional. if the only thing you send your prospects is a "buy from us now" or "take a demo now" message, you aren't doing true e-mail marketing. You're doing e-mail sales or e-mail lead generation.
Why Do True E-mail Marketing?
True e-mail marketing, which would include branding, relationship-building, sales/lead generation, and other efforts, will not only deliver sales or leads today, but also make it easier for you to deliver sales or leads in the future. These other efforts can be used to:

Why Don't More Companies Do True E-mail Marketing?
Many companies have made the investment in true e-mail marketing and are reaping the benefits. But just as many, if not more, haven't. Why?
One reason is that laser focus on short-term sales or lead generation. If you have even a halfway successful promotional e-mail program, it's likely that your first relationship building e-mail effort won't meet or beat the promotional e-mail's conversion rate. If a company has a strong focus on short-term results, that can be a hard sell: why spend additional money to develop an e-mail with a mix of editorial (read: nonpromotional) and promotional content when you could just do an additional send of your promotional e-mail?
In the short term, another send of the promotional e-mail is the wiser choice. But if you're looking at the mid- to long term, the logic shifts. There comes a point of decreasing returns. If you send a promotional e-mail to your house list once a month and generate 100 leads from it, that doesn't mean that a weekly send of the promotional e-mail will garner 400 leads per month. Success stories might cause readers who didn't know they had a problem to want to learn more about your solution. Getting a daily tip with your branding might trigger a call to your sales team when a need arises.
The key to success is your content's quality. Developing an e-mail message that isn't 100 percent promotional takes more effort than creating a single promotional e-mail. Many companies have an e-mail newsletter but find it isn't driving sales, leads, or other business goals; often it's being sent but rarely opened, read, or clicked through from. The reason is quality.
People are deluged with e-mail today. And they are busy. Just sending an e-mail newsletter isn't enough; you have to make sure your content is compelling to your readers. This is where many attempts at true e-mail marketing fall down. Companies are going through the motions, but they either don't have the resources or don't know how to create an e-mail newsletter that's
engaging to readers and effective at forwarding the business' goals.

The beauty of a true e-mail marketing program is that the branding and relationship-building efforts aren't replacing the promotional efforts, they're being added into the mix. So you aren't losing the 100 leads your promotional e-mail brings in every month. Instead, you'll add a different type of communication to the mix in hopes of providing a short-term lift to leads
and building value over time that allows you to maintain and increase this monthly lift.

EBay, which decided to limit major announcements to twice-yearly, has been quiet up until this week when it announced its spring policy and site changes for buyers and sellers.
Last year eBay slugged through harsh policy changes that kept many sellers in an uproar for most of 2008, such as DSR restrictions and opening the site to larger catalog merchants.
This year, the announced changes are pretty low-key but, while we don’t anticipate the onslaught of seller boycotts that eBay provoked last year, sellers do need to be aware of the policy changes. Most of the following Policy changes will go into effect the week of June 15, 2009.
eBay, Not PayPal to Manage Dispute ResolutionOne of the biggest changes that will impact sellers is eBay’s plan to move dispute resolution from PayPal to eBay.
While the move isn't expected to happen until the second quarter of 2009, this really should come as no surprise. With more payment processors to choose from than just PayPal (like Pro Pay and individual merchant accounts) eBay really does need to bring seller dispute resolution in-house and away from the PayPal Resolution Center.
EBay will continue to advise buyers to work directly with sellers over disputes, but with the new process, buyers and sellers will also have an option to call eBay.
Summing up this announcement, eBay stated, "We are gradually transitioning the dispute process, and anticipate that the change will be complete before the holiday 2009 selling season. Once complete, the new on-eBay resolution process, backed by eBay customer support, will serve as the primary entry point for buyers who are unable to resolve disputes directly with eBay sellers."
New Seller-Helpers and ToolsOne small change that eBay is making is called the "Smart FAQ". The purpose is to take details from your listing to provide potential buyers with the answers to 20 questions before buyers contact you via "Ask a Question." This is a free add-on service that eBay says has been tested and proven to cut time spent answering buyer questions in half—without any negative impact on sales.
EBay is also offering package tracking that should help sellers who have customers e-mailing "Where's my item?"
According to eBay, starting in mid-June, when sellers upload tracking information, buyers will be able to access it in a pop-up window right from their own My eBay without having to go to the Order Details page.
If you pay shipping and print labels on eBay, your tracking information will be uploaded automatically. Sellers will also be able to upload shipment tracking numbers or delivery confirmation. You may have noticed we said “print labels on eBay”. This is also a new, recently announced feature.
At launch, you will only be able to print USPS labels via eBay's label printing solution—if you want to print UPS labels, you need to continue to use PayPal's label printing for the time being.
Soon, sellers will also have more options for Custom Item Specifics. Here's what happened when Chris Savage, the chief executive of Wistia.com, searched for the phrase "private video sharing" on Twitter, a social networking site. One post he found read, "A teacher requested a private 'video sharing' Web site so that specialists can observe student behavior—can anyone refer one?"
That got Savage's attention. He e-mailed back: "Still looking for a private video sharing site?"
Minutes later came the reply: "YES! It's the first request for one—thought I'd hit up my tweets before [I] go digging."
Savage: "Cool. You may want to check out Wistia.com. Full disclosure, I'm the CEO; -)"
While this exchange may seem a bit cryptic, Savage is one of a growing number of business owners to whom it makes an awful lot of sense. Savage frequently trolls Twitter looking for sales leads for his five-person, $1 million company, which makes software that facilitates video sharing through a private network. Although Savage has been using Twitter for only a year, it's already helped him find 12 new clients for his Lexington (Mass.)
company. "This is a no-cost way of marketing," he says. Because Twitter provides a public forum, each post becomes a form of promotion as other users follow Savage's posts. "You are building a reputation; people can go back and look at your Web site and the quality of your content, and you are becoming part of the community," Savage says. Other business owners are using Twitter for market research and to keep an eye on customer service

Twitter distinguishes itself from MySpace (NWS) and Facebook by relying less on picture-laden profiles and more on posts of fewer than 140 characters, referred to as "tweets" or "microblogs." Twitter's simplicity is paired with a powerful search function that allows users to mine others' updates in real time for useful nuggets.
"Twitter lets you stay on top of what is happening within your client base," says Chip Lambert, owner of
Network2Networth, a business development consultancy in Phoenix. "You can look at conversations and reposition yourself, your products, and your services in a way that appeals to the market you are reaching out to."

An estimated 5 million people use Twitter, according to Cambridge-based Forrester Research. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone says businesses "that are not quite big enough to make an impact on the Web, or to spend resources there," have been some of the earliest users of the site. He says some San Francisco-based coffee shops and bakeries have sent tweets to tell their customers about specials or products they may be out of that day. One Los Angeles taco truck uses Twitter to tell customers where it will be that day. "Businesses use this as a
hybrid between marketing and customer service," says Stone. "They use the Twitter Search to track mentions of their products and services and as a way to begin a conversation."
Like any online forum, Twitter may not be for everyone. Its immediacy and conversational nature make it a boon to those whose products and services may take a bit more explaining or back-and-forth. And it can be a time suck. "One of the major drawbacks is that [Twitter] is very addictive," says Savage, who has 800 followers and in turn follows just as many. He uses a popular add-on called Tweet Deck, which lets members organize messages by category.
GETTING STARTED

Joining Twitter is easy and free. You create a user name and password, then log onto the site. (You can also sign up to have tweets delivered to your mobile phone.) Once inside, there's a big box at the top labeled "What are you doing?" While you could start by typing something as mundane as "I am drinking my coffee and checking out Twitter," you'll see tabs on the right that say "following," "followers," and "updates," enabling you to follow others whose posts you find interesting. Once you've been posting for a while, people follow you too. A
certain viral element takes over, and soon you may wind up in the middle of a Twitter community with common interests.
You'll also find thousands of irrelevant posts. "It is easy to get lost and sidetracked," says Lambert, who suggests entrepreneurs think strategically about how they might use Twitter. A mortgage broker, for example, could follow discussions people are having about new tax credits, learn what advice they're getting and which sites they're linking to, and then compose a suitable message to address them.

The viral component of Twitter has helped Andra Watkins, founder of Positus, a consulting firm based in Charleston, S.C. She joined Twitter about six months ago, and at first found it a bit daunting. "I did not grow up using these tools and it has taken me time to develop the voice and approach," she says. Still, she has built a following of 600 Twitterers—friends, colleagues, bloggers, and potential customers. She in turn follows about 600 other people, including a group from her home state of South Carolina—85% of whom she figures could help bring in business. She also follows influential bloggers and those with large Twitter followings, in hopes
of establishing a dialogue with them, and keeps tabs on her competitors. Watkins sometimes sends out tweets that have nothing to do with her business, such as a few complaining about exercise. "It makes me more approachable," Watkins says. In the past six months, she's found 10 new paying clients through Twitter.

Other business owners, like Michael Coffey, chief executive of BlueCotton in Bowling Green, Ky., are using Twitter to enhance customer service. The 25-employee, $4 million company lets customers design their own shirts online. For the past two months, two of Coffey's factory workers have used iPhones to snap pictures of completed shirts, and then to send photo tweets to customers right before shipping. "Customers have some anxiety when they purchase shirts online," Coffey says. The tweets help alleviate those concerns—and have won new customers who spot the designs on Twitter. "Having people follow BlueCotton is a feather in our cap,"
Coffey says. "It helps create real fans of the company."

So you have competition. Somebody else is getting some of the revenues that could be coming your way. If you're competing against a much larger company with more resources, you have your work cut out for you. This is not the time to bury your head in the sand.

You can consider going in new directions or taking advantage of new developments and new technology. If you have only ten customers to please, you can move in a new direction easier than if you have to keep up with orders from thousands. If you have only a few thousand dollars invested in equipment and no full
time employees, you can change your way of doing business almost overnight.
The companies that succeed these days are ones that can experiment, innovate and get ahead of the others. You may be in a much better position to do this than your larger competitors.
1. Find what makes your business unique. Stop and think about it. Why should people come to you? Do you offer convenience to customers? Extra service? Is your product faster or nicer looking or easier to use?
List one or more things that set your business apart from the others. Now consider which of these you want to emphasize. As your business grows larger, you won't be able to do all the little
things that were easy in the beginning. The benefits of continued marketing is in my opinion well worth the small amount of effort it takes to set up a squeeze page. Capturing contact details gives you two bites of the cherry, and that little bit of effort can be the difference between being a successful or a failing affiliate marketer.

requires sacrificing some of the visual attractiveness of the page and changing the textual content into somewhat search engine friendly. As a result, a well-optimized page may look unattractive to human visitors.
With cloaking, one can create two sets of pages: the first for search engine spiders, the second for regular human visitors. This enables retaining the good look and feel of the site for humans, while still being able to show highly optimized pages to the spiders and thus generate nice amounts of traffic from the search engines. Cloaking also prevents humans from seeing what kind of optimization techniques you are using and stealing your optimized pages.
One of the big questions with cloaking is how to tell whether the arriving visitor is a search engine spider or a human. Identification is usually done either by checking the visitors' IP address, or his User-agent string. The former is more secure and generally a better solution, but requires a comprehensive up-to-date database of known spider IP's, which takes a lot of work to gather and maintain (these lists can also be bought, which is sometimes the best option). The latter is easier to maintain, but is generally considered way too insecure to be used.
Cloaking is often confused with doorway pages and hiding text by making it the same color as the background, but it has nothing to do with those two. As said above, cloaking only makes sure that the search engine spider gets another page and the human visitors get another. Cloaking does not in any way effect the contents of those two pages - the hard work of optimizing and creating them is left for the webmaster. But even while cloaking is not

a spamming technique in itself, many search engines dislike it and will punish sites that are cloaking their pages.
Possible punishments include burying the site so deep in the results that it will never see the sun again, or completely banning it from the index. For example, Altavista and Inktomi have been known to punish cloaking sites every now and then. You should also be careful when cloaking for Google, not because they are especially efficient in catching cloakers, but because they have a "cache" feature that allows visitors to their search engine to see the same content the spider saw when it visited your pages. Fortunately you can prevent Google from doing this if you wish by inserting a meta content="NOARCHIVE" name="GOOGLEBOT"tag in the HEAD section of your pages.
The risk level involved with cloaking greatly depends on what you're actually doing with it. If you have a strong, IP-based cloak, your Title, Meta Description and the first row of text are the same with both your search engine optimized and your visitor optimized pages and the sizes of those pages (in KB's) are close to each other, you're pretty safe. With things like this, you're never completely safe, but that's pretty much as close to "safe" as you can get.
On the other hand, if you're running a cloak that relies solely on User-agent strings for spider detection or an IP-based cloak without a good IP database, you're asking for trouble. And if your SE-optimized pages and user-optimized pages don't obey by the safety rules outlined above, you're pretty likely to burn your fingers in the fire. In any case, you should always be prepared for the worst when you're cloaking - you might get banned, so have some extra cash available to buy another domain name to play with.
The troubles with cloaking do not entirely lay with the threat of getting punished by the search engines. Running a good cloak takes a great deal of work, especially if you are planning to create a specially optimized page for each engine instead of one general search engine optimized page.

That being said, the real question is "Do I need to cloak?". If you're fighting for extremely competitive keywords, then it might be a good idea to consider cloaking after you're familiar enough with the search engine optimization techniques to get the most out of the benefits cloaking can bring. So, unless you're really sure you're going to need it in your promotion efforts, I wouldn't recommend cloaking just because you can. Is it important? That also depends on which definition you believe and who you ask that question to. Do they know what percentage the search engines will want to read for the best results? No. When writing copy for your website, you must be conscious of the keywords you wish to promote. Don’t pick too many keywords and try to optimize each page of your website for twenty different things. If you do, it will not be relevant for any of them. That isn’t guru talk, that’s just plain old fashioned common sense. Remember that search engines crawl web pages, not web sites. If you choose just one or two keywords per webpage that you wish that page to be optimized for, then you can optimize the page easily and write text the user will want to actually read. Write your sales text the way you would with only the user in mind and with making sales in mind. Then go back and reread the page. Find places where you can add in your keyword without destroying the flow you created when you wrote the text in the first place. Now, do you need to hire an SEO company to do that? Do you know your product? Do you know how to sell your product? Then you need to write the text. If you do not wish to write the text, then hire a writer. You still don’t need a search engine optimization guru. Some search engine optimization experts will tell you they can increase your link popularity. They use a variety of methods. They create websites where they put all of their clients website links so you will have links to your website. The search engines call these link farms and discount any value they may have had in the past. Those methods, along with many others, are simply tricks that temporarily work. Alot of search engine optimization companies all keep up with the latest tricks and shortcuts. They may even get you some good results in the short-term. But what happens when the search engines catch onto the trick? I’m glad you asked. They stop letting that trick or shortcut work. They may even penalize the websites that used it. They penalize you, the customer, not the search engine optimization guru who used the trick and charged you for it. Whenever one of these companies tells you it has “inside information”, “ex-search engine company employees”, “guaranteed search engine placement”, guaranteed top 10 placement”, or “secret methods”, a red flag should go up in your mind right away.

If you start a business offline, like a restaurant or a store, you know that besides the money you will have to put up, you will also have to work to make it a success. It is no different when you start a business online. You have to work at it, if you want to be successful. If search engine optimization is not the most important thing you can do to become successful, what is? Again, I’m glad you asked. Promotion. Do not depend solely on being found by the search engines. Search engines are fickle creatures and what is today’s #1 can be tomorrow’s #100 just because they decided to change the way they give relevance to websites. Continually chasing this dream is a total waste of time.

There are other sources of traffic out there. Would you rather have 1000 hits from a search engine for one of your minor keywords or have 100 hits from someone who read an article you wrote and came to your website because they liked what you had to say? If you chose the thousand hits, you don’t get it yet. Out of that 1000 hits you might convert 2 of them into sales. Out of the 100, you may get as many as 20-25 people who want to buy from you. Conversion rate is more important than how many hits you get to your website. Write articles about your website, about your products, about relevant topics to your products or services you wish to sell. Distribute or submit those articles to article submission websites that provide free content to webmasters. You may write one article like the one I am writing now and have 100 webmasters want to use it as content for their website. That would mean there is suddenly 100 other websites on topics related to your product that now contain a link to your website. That increases your link popularity without the need for a company to optimize you. Just by submitting your article to several article submission websites, you increase your link popularity, but when those webmasters start to republish your articles, you will see a huge increase in your page rank and the quality of your traffic. Some people write one article per month and others write one or more per day. It depends on you. How fast do you want your website to grow? How much time do you have to invest?

If you are not good at writing articles or do not have the time, hire a writer to ghost-write them for you with your byline and your links in the footer. So that we are clear. Search engine optimization is necessary, but by no means the most important thing you can do for your website to make it successful. I would not pay a lot of money for this service. Promoting your website IS the most important thing you can do. Articles are just one of the methods you can use to promote your website. Advertising, buying links on relevant websites, posting in forums and blogs with related topics, putting your link in your signature line, are some of the other ways you can promote your website.

My Checklist:

1. Be conscious of the keywords you wish to target with each webpage you build. Write your text for the reader, then go back and add your keywords without destroying the flow of your text.

2. Make sure the website is easy to navigate and user-friendly. Don’t assume the customer knows the web site as well as you do. Make it simple. Make it easy to find the buy button!

3. Once the website is built, quit worrying about the newest search engine trick or optimization technique as some like to call it.

4. Search for blogs and forums with related topics and sign up for them and participate in discussions with your link in your signature line.

5. Write articles about related topics and submit them everywhere or buy a service like isnare.com that will do the submissions for you. If you cannot write the articles, hire someone to do it for you.

6. Don’t do link trades with websites that have less traffic than you do. Buy links on websites that have more traffic than you and are on a topic related to your products or services.
